The Best Upgrades for the 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup & 1st Gen 4Runner

The 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup and 4Runner 6-lug 4×4 trucks are two of the best early independent front suspension (IFS) trucks ever made. TOTAL CHAOS Fabrication is known for producing some of the best Toyota off road suspension lift kits. TC offers upgraded components for the 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup and 1st Gen 4Runner including long travel kits, rebuildable idler arms, upgraded steering arms, rear shackles, weld-on shock mounts, and more.

The 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup and 1st Gen 4Runner Gen II Caddy Kit long travel system features a coilover shock conversion which is a major upgrade over the weak torsion bar assembly. The coilover conversion allows for customized spring rates and the ability to tune the ride quality based on the driver’s preference. With increased articulation, the Caddy Kit allows 12” of wheel travel with 4WD.

Two versions of the long travel kit are available; one with boxed lower control arms and another with tubular lower control arms (LCA). The boxed LCA’s include a lower uniball conversion adapter while the tubular lower control arm version can be installed with a factory lower ball joint. The TC lower uniball conversion is an optional upgrade to the kit. Both the boxed and tubular lower control arms are pre-tabbed for dual shock capability.

The TC pre-bent shock hoop kit eliminates the need for any custom fabrication when installing the new shocks. The optional secondary bypass shocks offer adjustable compression and rebound settings to maximize the 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup and 4Runner’s off road capability. TC worked with the engineers at KING Shocks to develop a custom length and custom valved long travel shock built specifically for the TC 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup and 1st Gen 4Runner Gen II Caddy Kit. Our 2.5 diameter long travel coilovers feature remote reservoirs for better heat dissipation and increased off road performance. If long distance and going fast is your dream build, TC offers a custom length secondary bypass shock that bolts directly to the lower control arm tabs and secondary shock hoop system.

The Toyota factory idler arm has plastic internal bushings that wear out fast once larger tires are added and the vehicle is driven regularly off road. The best steering upgrade for the 1986-1995 Toyota Pickup and 4Runner is the TOTAL CHAOS Caddy Idler Arm. This bolt-on idler arm eliminates the sloppy steering feel and is assembled with a ¾” bolt and double stacked sealed roller bearings. This idler arm steering upgrade is fully rebuildable.

Looking for the tightest steering response possible? TC’s heim joint tie rod steering upgrade is the next step. The heim steering upgrade is stronger than the stock tie-rod and will provide a more responsive feel to the steering system. TC’s heim steering upgrade is only compatible with our Gen II Caddy Kit long travel kit.

The final upgrade to the Toyota steering system would be to install the TOTAL CHAOS King Kong steering system. True to its name, this upgrade greatly increases component durability and greatly improves steering response when larger tires are installed. The kit consists of a gusseted factory Toyota center link and a gusseted 4130 chromoly pitman arm fitted with a ¾” stainless steel uniball.
