This is why we off road – to explore trails, hike historic points of interest and spend quality time with great people. We extended our 2026 CHAOS GAMES to a 5-day trip so that we could take it all in this year. Mother nature gifted us with 3 desert tortoise sightings this trip – making this the 2026 Turtle Tour.
Hiking Death Valley sand dunes, exploring historic mines, pulling over for POI kiosks, hacky sack pit stops and a picnic at 7,400 feet with a 360-degree view of CHAOS Country. It was a fluid schedule with routes that zig zagged and crossed the last frontier. And of course we pulled into Gold Point to shoot the shit with Walt.
Gold Point Notes:
Travel Nevada, “Gold Point may not exist today if it weren’t for Las Vegas wallpaper hanger Herb Robins, who with partner Walt Kremin, owns most of the towns buildings. Herb and his friend Chuck Kremin came across Gold Point in the late 1970’s, and while only a few hardy residents remained, dozens of deteriorating , wooden edifices peppered the original main street. The opportunity to to purchase some of these buildings presented itself, and Chuck and Herb sprung into action in 1981. Chuck’s brother Walt joined them in purchasing the post office, genral store, and the home of Senator Harry Wiley, which was complete with original furnishings.
Interestingly, Herb hit a mega-jackpot in Las Vegas, which enabled him to purchase most of the historical structures you can see and visit today. Soon after hitting it big in Vegas, Herb and Walk bought all of the buildings that came available and have lovingly restored them since. Community members and friends of Walt and Herb banded together to repair roofs and overhaul the interiors, but were very careful to leave the weather-beaten historical exteriors intact.”
Within 2 days we had to abandon a trail at 10,000 feet due to a snow drift, then skated down a trail at -300 feet. We got to take it all in each day with random pit stops. We stumbled upon an aircraft training mission and then hosted a military appreciation BBQ for the Air Force.
There’s not much that 5 days in the desert with only the best people can’t cure! No cell phone service and being disconnect from technology but fully connected to mother-nature has a way of fully re-setting you. Non-stop radio banter between rigs with like-minded people leads to belly laughs for hours on end. Thick skin on these trips is a requirement. A spontaneous picnic at an abandoned ranch offered our crew the ability to relax and take in the terrain and majestic mountain.
Time seems to be going faster and faster when your stuck in grind of pavement life. But when you are out on the trails, and completely remote, the world seems to pause and rewinds back to the pace of the wild west. We must admit, we are already missing the crew and the incredible views. RAD DAYS ONLY!
