2011 VORRA Prairie City Short Course Race Report

Dan Vance finishes 2nd at the VORRA Prairie City Short Course Race

The final two rounds of the VORRA season were short course events held at the Folsom Ca. Prairie City off road facility. The race format was 2 days of racing on 2 different tracks with 3 moto’s held each day. The best combined scores of the 3 moto’s determined the finishing order. Each day was scored as a separate race. Group T had 10 trucks on the entry list and was the largest class of the weekend. TOTAL CHAOS drivers Dan Vance and Mike Koenig would have their share of ups and downs before the weekend was over.Team TC pro driver Dan Vance has never raced at a VORRA event, but he made a statement early on in day 1 that his TOTAL CHAOS/GoodYear equipped stock Toyota V6 4.0 was there to handle some business. With a win in the very first moto, and a 4th in the second moto after an inverted start , he battled door to door with the VORRA series regulars. Dan finished the day with a 2nd place finish in the third moto. The Germans had an edge with a larger motor but Vance left nothing on the table and drove the wheels off his truck to end day 1 with a combined 2nd place overall finish. “We had an epic battle with Sam Cothrun, Povey & the Germans each moto. There was some rubbing but that’s short course racing and we all kept it clean. The course was really rocky. My co pilot took a shot to the chest from a fist size rock that could have ruined a day if it did not hit my aluminum visor first. My tire traction was great and my Fox shocks tuned by PRG soaked up the course. My Total Chaos suspension and Currie Racing rear end gave me the ability to stick my lines in the turns and hammer down in the rough sections,” stated Vance after the race. With no damage to the truck he was ready for day 2.

Vance managed to get a great start in moto 1 again and never looked back. With the Germans gunning for his position the crowd was on their feet every lap and the trucks battled every corner with 1429 barely beating the Germans V8. Moto 2 was just as intense right off the start but with the inverted starting order Vance could not reel in the V8 and had to settle for a 2nd place. Vance pushed the truck for 2 solid days putting on a great show for the crowd and in moto 3 on the last lap with 2 turns to go while in the lead, the clutch assembly exploded in the transmission. “You never want to fight that hard for 2 days and have parts failure. It was a brand new clutch, so it was a fluke break. I worked really hard all weekend behind the wheel, and I had a blast.”

Mike Koenig’s weekend would not go as well. Day 1 right off the start in moto 2 in thick dust going into the first corner he tangled with a few other trucks and broke a rear axle. Between the moto’s he swapped it with a spare and salvaged a mid pack finish in moto 3. Day 2 Koenig still fought issues. The rear 3rd member grenaded in the second moto and his weekend was over. He had one of those weekends that racers dread, but a lot was learned and he will return next season stronger, and ready to battle.
